When a job change allowed Shelley Kapitulik to escape the daily grind of commuting to New York City and work from home, she began to spend her reclaimed free time at the gym. When aggravated knees forced her to reduce the intensity of workouts, Shelley, who had already been practicing both Pilates mat and reformer for a number of years, began to increase her frequency of participating in classes at area gyms.
Shelley’s enthusiasm and love for the method inspired her to teach; she earned her Advanced Mat Certification to teach in the classical style through Power Pilates, helping people at all levels of physical fitness develop core strength and flexibility, and improve overall health.
In addition to Mat Pilates, Shelley holds certifications from Pound Fitness, Schwinn’s MPower with Wattage Indoor Cycling and Crunch Fitness’ TRX Bootcamp, Tred Bootcamp, Barre, Bosu Bootcamp, Cardio Tai Box and Yoga Body Sculpt, as well as continuing education hours focusing on Pilates modifications for knees, hips and back issues as well as pregnancy, and the integration of props in the Classical order.
Prior to joining Privé Swiss Fitness in 2017, Shelley taught at several studios and fitness clubs in Westchester County, New York and Fairfield County, Connecticut, as well as a physical therapy facility where, working closely alongside a team of Doctors of Physical Therapy, small group classes were integrated into patient PT programs. Shelley also served as a Regional Group Fitness Manager for a franchise of Crunch Fitness, overseeing the hiring, launch and ongoing operations of 8 clubs in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, as well as running the Pilates certification for new hire instructors teaching the format.
In addition to teaching part-time, Shelley is a freelance publicist, specializing in media, health and wellness, and lifestyle clients.
